Naeema Al Nofeli


Naeema Al Nofeli is a PhD research candidate in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University. Her doctoral research investigates the interaction between biochar produced from date palm waste and UAE soils towards water retention and climate change. During her PhD, Naeema taught various courses and is a member of Athena Swan to support women's inequality and diversity at the Earth Sciences Department. Naeema is also a member of Durham Energy Institute, an affiliate at Terra.do (Action for Climate Change), member of International Biochar Initiative and British Soil Society. Naeema earned her master’s degree at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (now known as Khalifa University). Where she managed to co-author a paper publication in 2014 which has now been cited 62 times. Additionally, she managed to win the 2nd place prize in her research at a SILA Connection Conference in 2012 that was held at New York University Abu Dhabi. In 2013, Naeema had the opportunity to collaborate on a biochar project regarding date palm waste at the University of Eastern Finland. After her master’s degree graduation, she immediately was offered to work at New York University as a EHS Policy Developer and Coordinator. Where she was able to establish the first Executive Sustainability Committee and establish the first yearly green campus initiative.
